Appe/ guliyappa/ paddu/ gulpanglu recipe


I learned this recipe of appe from my mom. She makes delicious appe. Appe is best enjoyed with coconut chutney or fried grams chutney.

It's a south Indian breakfast dish made with a rice and urad dal batter. With this same batter you can also make dosa.

Ingredients -

1. Sona masuri rice - 2 cups
2. Urad dal (Black lentil dal) - 1 cup
3. Thin poha (Avalakki) - 1/2 cup
4. Chopped onion - 2 nos.
5. Chopped coriander leaves - 3/4 cup
6. Chopped green chillies - 2
7. Cumin seeds - 1 Tb spoon
9. Ginger paste - 1 Tb spoon
10. Little oil to add in the moulds

Procedure -

1. Wash rice and urad dal and soak separately for 5 to 6 hours. Cove it with a lid.


2. Drain the water from rice and blend it to smooth paste and pour it in a deep bottomed large utensil.

3. Now blend the urad dal and thin flaked rice (Avalakki) to smooth paste. You can keep the required amount of water in urad dal for blending.

4. Pour the urad dal paste in the rice paste and mix well.


5. Cover with a lid and keep it for 11 to 12 hours.

6. After 11 to 12 hours you can see the batter has risen well.


7. Now add chopped onion, cumin seeds. ginger paste, chopped green chillies, chopped coriander leaves and salt. Mix well.


8. Now place the appe mould on medium heat and add 1/2 tea spoon oil in each circle.


 9. Once the oil turns hot pour the batter in each mould with the help of large spoon.


10. Reduce the flame to low and cover with a lid 2 to 3 minutes.

11. Now open the lid. Once you open the lid you can see that the appe are cooked from the top and bottom.


12. Slowly flip the appe upside down with the help of spoon and keep it on low flame for another minute.

13. Remove the appe with spoon and serve hot with coconut chutney or Fried grams chutney.
